How is Visionaries In Action across Africa related to your vision? My vision is the culture of Ubuntu, the vehicle is Volunteering / Service / Dharma / Humanitarianism - whatever the terminology, it's a movement from theory into action, and governance into renaissance. Inner awakening and national pride in BEING African cannot happen by passing a new law or policy - each citizen has to experience it for her/himself. I consider myself Human, then African of Indian Diaspora, not the clichéd South African Indian. The power of Seva... The power of seva (selfless service) to transform human lives is being felt everyday in South Africa as people with little or no resources help each survive the ravaging impact of AIDs and poverty. There is no excuse for those of us who have even a little luxury NOT to give of ourselves. We take none of our material wealth with us when we die - maybe our true legacy is not what we are known to have, but rather, what we have given away. Our true assets are banked in the amount of kindness, compassion, caring, healing, love etc - that we create in our relationships with other human beings. We have choices... We have the choice to stay in our ego-driven lifestyles improving our personal status void of meaning or inner happiness. The salary raise doesn't equate to an escalation in our joy at being alive - and so often the younger generations are self-actualising in a third of the time our sacrificial parents did. But when we get there - so is a compelling void! We've supposedly done it all, triple degrees, and successful track records working in business or government, MBA's and 'stability'. Yet inside, the mirror reflects a person looking for the 'real reason' for it all. People also ask that question when life has been destructive from the start - and its been a life of constant tragedies from broken relationships, to career disappointments. I started Visionaries In Action across Africa in 1999, at a point when I finally found my own life purpose to create opportunities for people to discover their True Nature and potential for being Light in the world. The link between Volunteering and Life Vision... When you serve someone in need - you can't help but feel a connection with that person regardless of their culture or background. In their need, they are actually GIVING you an opportunity to be your Highest Self. So to Volunteer is to be Visionary... and no less. It is your experience of Who You Really Are - catalysed by serving Another. Everybody's looking for Love - and most often in all the wrong places. Yet there are opportunities to feel unconditional Love - everyday... everywhere. And in Africa, we are blessed to faced with the world's greatest challenges! Where does all this come from? My guru, Swami Sivananda and other Sadguru's, who have over thousands of years, spread the same message... | |
